FAMU Golf has top 10 team finish at Sandestin Collegiate Classic

DESTIN, Fla. — The reigning SWAC and HBCU National champion FAMU Golf team placed eighth in the Sandestin Collegiate Classic. The Sandestin Collegiate Classic is a tournament hosted by Texas State University at Sandestin Resort’s Raven course.

The Rattlers had a very impressive weekend finishing 13 shots behind the champion of the tournament, Middle Tennessee. The Rattlers finished with a team total of 845 points. The Rattlers surprised many as they competed with bigger named institutions such as Austin Peay State, Troy, and University of Louisiana-Monroe.

Sophomore Emilio Garcia led the way for FAMU. Garcia shot 73 in round one, 65 in round two, and 68 in round three. Those scores rounded Garcia out at a 206 score that would secure him sixth place for the tournament individually.

Another Rattler that finished top 10 was Sophomore Sascha Robinson. Robinson finished ninth individually shooting a 207. In three rounds, Robinson shot 68 in both the first and second rounds and followed with a 71 in the third round.

Middle Tennessee’s Carter Maneth came in first overall individually with a 197 total score. Maneth set the MTSU all time low with 66 in his first round and second round and followed with an overall tournament best of 65 in the third round to secure his victory.

The Rattlers also had two others to finish within the top 50 individually. Miguel Llas and Phalatphon Viboonviriyasakul finished tied at 43rd place. Llas shot 73 in the first round, 71 in the second round and 71 in the third round. Viboonviriyasakul shot 71 in the first round, 69 in the second, and 76 in the third round.

Coach Mike Rice was not available for an interview about the tournament.

The Rattlers will be in action again at Georgia Southerns’ Bash in Boro in Statesboro, Georgia on October 13th and 14th.
